Dr. Oz visits with Melissa Rivers, the daughter of the late comedienne Joan Rivers, during the episode of his show airing today, Wednesday May 6.
Joan Rivers died last year at age 81. The acerbic, take-no-prisoners comedienne, fashion critic and author suffered complications during a surgical procedure. Melissa filed a malpractice lawsuit against the clinic earlier this year.
“The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible, ” she said in a statement at the time.
Although she and her mom were known for their sardonic quips over fashion disasters and other matters, the two had a close and loving relationship.

During the visit with Dr. Oz, Melissa shares personal memories, such as her efforts to tend to her mom in her final days.
“We brought in everything from our night tables, and then our friend went and we got all of her own bedding and her favorite pretty loungy outfit and I brought in hair and makeup,” Melissa said “They washed her hair and they did her and she looked amazing and like her skin looked amazing and her best friend kept saying ‘God her skin looks so good, Joan your skin is so good wake up you have to see this.’ I don’t mean to laugh, but you have to, so I just made sure she looked her best before everybody came to say goodbye.”
She also talked about Joan’s memorial service. Melissa arranged for close friends and family to say their goodbyes in private.
“I knew that was probably the one thing that she wouldn’t have wanted me to do because she was like, ‘Oh please nobody needs to waste their time, oh this is ridiculous,’” Melissa said. “But I realized her friends needed it and somewhere I wanted her to know how beloved she was because she never felt that way. So I took a whole day and evening and we let certain people know that it was time to go.”
