Kanye West has diagnosed the reason why his fashion line hasn’t been more warmly embraced.
“I got discriminated against in fashion … for not being gay,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with SHOW Studio recently.
Kanye’s Yeezy line was dressed down, so to speak, in “Kanye West is Fooling the Fashion World,” in which The Cut writer Cathy Horyn said his “drab, broken-down basics proved he can’t be taken seriously as a designer.”
Kanye decried other forms of prejudice in the interview.
“In music, you definitely get discriminated against if you are gay. It takes some amazing talents to really break down that barrier,” he said. “It’s the people that break the stereotypes that make history but I just thought it was interesting to point that out about the fashion world and the music world and just culturally, it’s reverse discrimination.”
He was careful to correct himself when he referred to Caitlyn Jenner as Bruce, the name the former Kardashian patriarch, Olympic gold medalist and father of six used for about 65 years, before assuming a new identity.
“To let your life be controlled by public opinion would be like asking to sit in traffic for the rest of your life,” Kanye said in response to a question about Jenner. “Bruce just got off the exit sign and drove as fast as he wanted to. Oh sorry, it’s disrespectful to use that name but I’m still getting acquainted with what’s politically correct because it’s new, it’s modern. This is like Roman times, bro.”
