WWE fans are looking ahead to tonight’s event at Philips Arena with caution, given the FBI said it was taking “seriously” a supposed threat from Islamic State terrorists – but also with determination not to let terrorists keep them from living life as usual.
“They’re just trying to scare Americans from living their lives!! I say go and enjoy the show and show these idiots that Americans are not afraid of these punks!!” a poster named Justin said on the WWE’s official Facebook page.
“The rest of the world has carried on as normal since the Paris attacks. No reason for the USA not to do the same,” a fan named Christopher said.
Tonight’s WWE Survivor Series is one of several possible targets for Sunday attacks by Islamic State terrorists, an online post purportedly tied to the cyberactivist group Anonymous claimed Saturday.
FBI officials said the agency was aware of the “alleged threat” and taking it “seriously” — but added that there was no “specific or credible information of an attack at this time.”
“We have, however, made the proper notifications as we continue to work closely with our law enforcement and private sector partners to keep our community safe,” J. Britt Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Atlanta field office, said in a statement emailed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The unspecified threats follow a rash of deadly violence around the globe by Islamic State and other terrorist groups. The Paris death toll now stands at 130 and could rise. More than 40 people were killed in a pair of suicide bombings in southern Beirut suburb that’s a stronghold of the militant Shiite Hezbollah, a massacre also tied to Islamic State terrorists. Nearly 30 people were killed during a siege at the Radisson Blu hotel in Mali. A jihadist group known as the Mourabitounes has claimed responsibility.
Fans going tonight should expect lots of security screening and are encourage to take MARTA. Bags won’t be allowed into the facility, Philips officials said.
“I’m supposed to be going with my boyfriend,” a fan named Ellie said. “Hoping everything will be ok.”
“Prayers for everyone going to Survivor Series,” a fan named George said.
A fan named Allan added: “To those of you not very political, being driven into fear so you give up your rights is what the enemy wants. Being driven to fear so you lash out against them in blind anger is what drives their recruitments.”
