President-elect Donald Trump is demanding an apology Veep-elect Mike Pence got booed during a performance of “Hamilton,” the hit Broadway phenomenon.
The audience booed Pence loudly at several points during the evening, as a theater patron’s Twitter clip captured.
Afterward, actor Brandon Victor Dixon addressed Pence directly, from the stage, on behalf of the cast (and, it seems, the audience as well).
“We had a .. guest in the audience this evening,” Dixon said. Pence was exiting the theater but Dixon urged him to stick around for another minute, which the vice president-elect did.
“We welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us,” Dixon began. ”
“We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf all of us. All of us.”
The crowd applauded enthusiastically.
A livid president-elect Donald Trump lashed out via Twitter:
Pence hasn’t responded publicly; his most recent social media post from Nov. 17 says, “Great day of meetings on Capitol Hill with House and Senate leadership talking about working together on a Trump agenda for America.”
The hashtag #BoycottHamilton is now trending, to apparently zero effect. The show is sold out through at least August 2017.
