President-elect Donald Trump’s tweet blasting Vanity Fair after a restaurant review posited that the Trump Grill might be “the worst restaurant in America” hit home – with Vanity Fair.
The smart and venerable glossy turned Trump’s Twitter tirade into a come-on for potential new subscribers.
The review of the Trump Grill (weirdly sometimes called the Trump Grille, like the E is only for special occasions) describes bland food, terrible cocktails and a beleaguered staff.
You might recall that Trump trumpeted the restaurant on Cinco de Mayo. Digging into a Trump taco bowl he tweeted, “I love Hispanics!”
So, the Vanity Fair piece went about like you’d expect. A sample:
“The allure of Trump’s restaurant, like the candidate, is that it seems like a cheap version of rich. The inconsistent menus—literally, my menu was missing dishes that I found on my dining partners’—were chock-full of steakhouse classics doused with unnecessarily high-end ingredients. The dumplings, for instance, come with soy sauce topped with truffle oil, and the crostini is served with both hummus and ricotta, two exotic ingredients that should still never be combined. The menu itself would like to impress diners with how important it is, randomly capitalizing fancy words like “Prosciutto” and “Julienned” (and, strangely, ”House Salad”)”
Trump responded like he always does: with an incendiary tweet:
