University of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban and their respective teams took a little time out Sunday for movie night.

Both teams were welcomed by Regal Atlantic Station, and fans were on hand to cheer for each group. They saw advance screenings of different films, both of which open Jan. 19, and both have Atlanta connections.

Georgia watched “12 Strong,” a thrilling new drama based on the nonfiction book “Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan.”

The action in “12 Strong” takes place not long after the Sept. 11 attacks.

A U.S. Special Forces team led by a courageous captain (played by Chris Hemsworth) takes on the Taliban via horseback. One of the characters is based on the experiences of Chief Warrant Officer Bob Pennington, who lives in metro Atlanta.

Alabama saw “Den of Thieves,” which was filmed in Atlanta. It’s billed as “a gritty Los Angeles crime saga which follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.” (I haven’t seen it yet).

During the viewing Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who appears in that movie, tweeted his support for the Tide.
