Marietta Rotarians celebrate student success

For nearly a decade, the Rotary Club of Marietta has supported the Marietta Performance Learning Center, a program that works to help students complete high school while developing business skills in preparation for entering the job market. To encourage students to stay on task, Rotary members participate in social outings, donate business attire, and send items such as gift cards to recognize achievement.

Marietta’s had a death in the family: remembering Rev. Sam Storey

Before there was social media, there was Rev. Sam Storey. The longtime senior associate minister of Marietta’s First United Methodist Church had a pre-Facebook knack for keeping up with his flock’s milestones and occasional missteps.

“You better hope Big Sam doesn’t find out,” my husband warned when I was once pondering a Sunday activity that would divert us from church. I scrapped those other plans.

This originally ran Jan. 16, 2003. Following the death of Rev. Sam Storey this week, we decided to run it again. Storey died at 74 after suffering heart disease for years. Details on visitation and service are here.

Marietta’s Strand Theatre will air the Super Bowl on Sunday

If you can’t be in Houston, maybe you can make it to Marietta for Sunday’s game.

The historic Earl Smith Strand Theatre plans to air the game on multiple screens. The event is free to attend and concessions will be available for purchase.

The pregame festivities start at 2 p.m.

Parking is free around the Marietta Square. We recommend the parking garage across the street from the theater.
